A vibe-coded Photoshop alternative: what to check before opening a PSD

Compositor documents layers, masks and limited PSD import. Here is what those facts mean for a practical Photoshop replacement trial on a Mac.

A Photoshop alternative is useful when it can complete the image work you actually do. A familiar toolbar alone does not answer that question. For a layered image editor, the important boundary is between a file opening and a document remaining editable in the way you need.

Our current Photoshop alternatives guide includes Compositor, a free Mac editor. Its first-party README documents layers, masks, PSD/PSB import restricted to 8-bit RGB, and PNG/JPEG export. It also warns that some text and vector content becomes raster content. These are documentary facts, not results of a VibeAlt compatibility test.

Check the machine before the file

Compositor’s documented requirements include macOS 26 or later and Apple silicon. That makes it a candidate for a specific Mac workflow. It does not establish a Windows, Linux or older-Mac replacement. Before investigating a complex document, compare the current release requirements with the machine you actually use.

The original implementation commit explicitly attributes an AI contribution. This is why it qualifies for our AI-build evidence label. That attribution is separate from its operating-system support and file fidelity.

Pick one representative PSD

Duplicate a document that includes the features you rely on: several layers, a mask, editable text, adjustments and any vector elements. Keep the original in its existing workflow. Open the copy in the alternative, inspect it visually and make a normal edit.

Do not reduce the test to whether the composite preview looks right. If you need to change text next week, rasterizing that text is a meaningful tradeoff even when the current preview is accurate. If your work uses a document mode outside the stated 8-bit RGB scope, do not treat a successful simple RGB import as proof that the other mode is supported.

Test the final handoff

Export the format your recipient needs. For a flat PNG or JPEG deliverable, inspect dimensions, transparency where applicable, and the visible result. Reopen the saved project in the alternative as well, so you know you can continue editing it.

If a client or teammate requires an editable Photoshop document, confirm the exact export and round-trip behavior in the current documentation and in a trial. We do not infer editable PSD export from PSD import. Our comparison page deliberately keeps unverified feature claims unknown.

Decide what you are replacing

Compositor may fit the documented core layered-raster workflow without replacing every plug-in, production convention or collaboration arrangement in your current setup. Write down the specific work you can move and the work that still depends on the incumbent.
